Celina is located in Denton and Collin Texas which is incorporated in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. With an estimated population of 18,000, the town has been rapidly expanding as its population has doubled since 2010! Nestled between the major arteries of Preston Road to the east and the future Dallas North Tollway to the west, Celina’s total projected buildout population is approximately 350,000. It is projected to be a major town in North Texas.
According to the United States Census Bureau, Celina boast 3,466 households in total with an average of 3.17 people living in each. The median household income is $124,375 with a 0.7% poverty rate. The age makeup for Celina is 8.4% 5 years old, 32.2%, and 11.1% over 65. The racial makeup of the area is 76.7% white, 9% black, 12% Hispanic, with the rest being comprised of 2 or more races. Celina encompasses a total area of about 31 square miles with a density of 571 people per square mile.
The climate in Celina is classified as humid sub-tropic. With a high of 94 degrees in July and a low of 31 degrees in January, the area is relatively warm on average. It receives about 41 inches of rainfall a year and about one inch of snow. Precipitation occurs 75 days out of the year and the area has 232 sunny days a year.
HISTORY
Celina was originally established 1 mile south of where it is currently centered in 1879. The first Methodist church was built in 1880 followed by a post office which officially opened in 1881. The town derived its name from Celina, Tennessee, the hometown of the first postmaster. By the year 1884, Celina was steadily growing and had a number of industrial and business buildings while containing a population of 150 residents.
When the St. Louis, San Francisco and Texas Railway came through the area in 1902, the town decided to relocate a mile north near the railway where it is centered today. The railway brought about tremendous growth and businesses began sprouting up. The people of Celina made the decision to incorporated in 1907.
The first road made for automobiles was constructed in 1915 and dubbed the name Celina Pike. In the 1920’s and 30’s, the town was provided energy and resources from the Lone Star Gas company and Texas Power and Light. When the great depression hit in the late 30’s, Celina’s population began to decline from 1,126 in 1920 to 994 in 1940. After World War 2, the town began to grow steadily and by 1980 the total population was 1520. By the year 2000, there were over 135 business in the area.
